Göteborgs stadsmuseum

Gothenburg’s history from pre-historic ages till today.

Explore the exciting pre-history, the 19th century life, the development of the modern industrial Gothenburg and the only exhibited Viking ship in Sweden, Äskekärrsskeppet.

The museum is located in the historic East India Company building from the 18th century. Here you can study the remains of how people lived in this part of Sweden 12,000 years ago and see why Gothenburg is called the Swedish Amsterdam. There are also temporary exhibitions about current topics, guided tours, city walks and much more.

Experience a city in motion, dramatic stories and iconic objects in four permanent exhibitions about Gothenburg’s history. A journey through time, from the mystery of the medieval silver heart to the world’s first Volvo.

Furthermore there’s a play room for the kids – the Children’s Museum as well as a shop, café and restaurant.
