New Älvsborg Fortress

One of Sweden’s most well preserved fortresses.

The New Älvsborg fortress, situated at the entrance of the port of Gothenburg, offers a captivating journey into Gothenburg’s 400-year history. Following a period of renovation, the fortress will reopen on 18th May 2023.

For five decades, the New Älvsborg fortress has been a popular destination to visit, boasting a restaurant, café, and museum. Construction of the fortress commenced in 1653 and reached completion in 1677. Throughout the war against Denmark from 1717 to 1719, the fortress endured numerous attacks, sustaining significant damage, yet it remained impervious to capture. From the late 18th century until 1866, the fortress served as a prison. However, as of 1868, the New Älvsborg fortress ceased to function as a defence facility and is now recognized as a distinguished state architectural monument.
