Långgatorna and Majorna

The street Andra Långgatan has a rich cultural life with galleries, pubs and restaurants. At Holy Moly you can listen to jazz, blues and folk music. And on the other side of the street you’ll find the local pub 2Lång that offers swinging jazz. The parallel street of these jazz clubs Tredje Långgatan offers live music each Friday and Saturday at Byns Bistro.

At the top of Stigberget you’ll find the large record store Bengans. In addition to buying records and attending signing events, you can listen to record-breaking bands and artists. At Karl Johansgatan 16, Hängmattan Kök & Bar arranges concerts with minor live acts a couple of times a week. Crippas Café at Chapmans Torg has a nice mix of local bands. If you have a dog, take it with you! In the Klippan district lies Porter Pelle, where you can listen to everything from pop to rock with the water as your closest neighbour.

The city centre

At Gullbergssvass you’ll find the party boat M/S Götapetter, where you can listen to blues, country, rock, punk and alternative metal. And a walk along the quay takes you to wonderful blues nights at S/S Marieholm (Packhuskajen 8). Not far from the quay is Bommens Restaurang & Bar (Torggatan 1), that from time to time offers evenings dedicated to opera, musicals and the art of big band-orchestras.

For more music, head for the city centre and John Scott’s Palace (Södra Hamngatan 2) or Irish Embassy Pub Downtown (Östra Hamngatan 50B). Café Grindstugan (Gamla allégatan 2) at beautiful Trädgårdsföreningen offers music evenings and at Folkmusikcafét (Södra Allégatan 4) you can listen to Swedish folk music. Do you prefer jazzy tones? Check out Unity Jazz (Kyrkogatan 13).

The archipelago

Are you in the archipelago? No worries, Gothenburg’s islands also have plenty of live music venues to offer. On the island of Björkö, in the northern part of the Gothenburg archipelago, you will find Seaside Björkö (Skarviksvägen 2) which offers live music at a convenient price. Hälso, located next to Björkö, offers live music, too. The restaurant Hälsö Brygga (Tjolmenvägen 27), placed on the harbour, arrange both live bands and music quizzes during the weekends.

The island of Hönö also has several gems to visit. With a view to Vinga lighthouse you can enjoy various music evenings dedicated to Swedish folk music legends such as Taube, Cornelis, Afzelius at Tullhuset (Västra Vägen 3). Franses, on Västra Vägen 11, is visited by a mix of artists every Saturday (more often during peak season).

If you move towards the southern part of the archipelago, more specifically Brännö, you can listen to live bands and djs at Brännö Varv (Långejorden 10) during the summer months. At Styrsö you will find Café Öbergska (Brattenvägen) which offers nice music evenings under the open sky, from March to October. Check out their Facebook page for the latest news.

Further south is Donsö. A walk to the end of the pier in the harbour takes you to Isbolaget (Donsö Hamnväg 45) which plays everything from country and 80’s rock to soul and funk.
