Cross country skiing on natural and artificial snow

Trails for skiing are prepared at many different locations around Gothenburg when there’s enough snow on the ground. The city of Gothenburg is not responsible for the preparation or maintenance of the trails, so make sure to check out skidspar.se to see the current status of the tracks. One of the popular areas to go skiing in is Sisjön, just south of Gothenburg.

The parks and gardens in Gothenburg are popular for skiing.

If Mother Nature doesn’t provide quite enough snow, there’s a trail made up of artificial snow (when it’s cold enough) in Landvetter, run by ski club OK Landehof. There’s a 60 SEK fee to use the trail. Read more on their website. (information in Swedish).

You can also go skiing all year round indoors at the Skidome in the area Kviberg. Read more here

Downhill skiing in Alebacken

Okay, so it’s not the french alps, but a short trip from Gothenburg you’ll find Alebacken, located in Alafors, a short trip from Gothenburg. There you’ll find three slopes, one for children, one red and one blue. They also have a café and a shop where you can rent skiing equipment.

Ice skating on lakes and ice rinks

Going out skating on a frozen lake on a sunny winter’s day can be an amazing experience. Just make sure to take all necessary safety precautions, and make sure to bring the proper equipment. Never go ice skating alone. A great place to go for wide open spaces and lovely surroundings is the lake Rådasjön, just outside of Gothenburg.

If you prefer skating at an ice rink, there are various options if the weather is cold enough. Make sure to check the City of Gothenburg’s website to see if the rink is open.

In the nature and recreational area Ruddalen, the newly renovated ice rink opened in December 2022. The ice rink is both an arena for ice sports and associations and is open for public skating during the school holidays. Read more about opening hours.

The hill Bragebacken in Slottsskogen is a great place for sledding.

Sledding in parks and forests

Going down a hill on a sled at full speed with the snow swishing past is a great feeling, no matter how old or how young you are. There are plenty of places to go if you want to experience this, we especially recommend the hill Bragebacken in the park Slottsskogen and the hill Brudarbacken in the recreational area of Delsjön. Bring your own sled!
